purple passion flower

TODAY'S PHOTO -
purple passion flower on a vine against a tree in a park behind a Little League baseball field.

In double checking on google to make sure that this was, in fact, a passion flower, I was surprised to learn that "passiflora" is quite a common vine in Florida. It was the first time I'd seen it growing "wild" outside of more formal public gardens.

I thought I'd share this purple passion flower with you as a bright start to the week, especially for all of those of you who love purple. Interestingly, as I keep looking at the flower I feel a little disconcerted. In the picture, all the skinny little petals (or whatever they are called) have the look of string, rather than the delicacy of flower.

Sam at first glance thought it was a flower made of wire. He now sees it as a propellor. Granddaughter Katilyn said it looks like a carousel, then stated that it reminds her of a all the hair on a Chinese dragon. Grandson Ryan said it simply looks like a pretty flower.

When I called the group together one last time, as I was finishing this issue, Sam pointed out the propellor. Ryan definitely agreed and then Kaitlyn noticed the pentagon.

Have you spent time recently with people in your life exploring what might be different perceptions of the same thing? Have fun with it. Perhaps use one of your favorite Picture to Ponder photos.

READER COMMENTS ON THE LAST ISSUE - Issue 114
"For some reason my brain resisted seeing images today. I just enjoyed the 'abstractness'of this photo.
Mary Gray

"I too saw the bird facing to the right, but imagined the figure facing to the left to be a mouse, wearing a cape with the hood pulled up on her head, holding a basket of flowers, walking in her snow shoes through the forest (she must be playing the lead in the Mouseketeer’s version of Little Red Riding Hood)." Bob Tatem

"At first I saw nothing but chaos and then as I paid attention more, I saw the bird -- so much like life. Chaos might be on the surface but by paying attention, we **see** the real beauty unfold. the photo does not pop out at you until you concentrate.

it does cause one to wonder what else we miss when we don't 'pay attention.'"
Judith Tramayne-Barth

Interestingly in a phone conversation with Adela Rubio, she too mentioned that one of the things that fascinated her was how quickly she was able to create order out of chaos when looking at this picture.

Be open today, and this week, on the lookout for places/situations that crop up in your life which initially appear chaotic. Stop and pay attention. Is there something else there.
