TODAY'S PHOTO -
the yellow hibiscus that greets us we pull up to
our house.
This photo was taken at night. I love the drama
of it brought out by the richness of the colors
and the contrasts against the dark background. A
bright yellow hibiscus, it is transformed here by
the night lighting and my camera's flash.
I also love the gentleness of the curves which are
emphasized by the deep shadows. At the same time
it's quite powerful and bold, in part, because it's
pointing almost directly at us. Lots of contrasts.
Another contrast, for those of you who like to play
with imagery, Sam sees this photo as an asteroid.
He's waiting for the fireworks.
On this upcoming 3-day Memorial holiday weekend,
where will you find the boldness and the contrasts
in your life? On what you can flash a light, figuratively
or actually, that will make a difference? And, for
those of you not in the United States, the same
questions still hold.
ACTIVITY FOR THOSE WITH DIGITAL CAMERAS -
To bring play into the weekend and, perhaps, add
a whole new dimension for you, take your digital
camera outside, in the dark, one or more nights.
Be prepared for some surprises.
I got some amazing photos recently simply by going
up to an object I wanted to photograph, often using
the macro lens, pointing the camera and clicking.
I actually had to try many different angles. Because
it was so dark I could not see my subject in the
viewfinder.
One of the fun ones was a toad sitting in the middle
of the street. I must have taken at least 10 shots
with only one coming out. Most of the others were
blurred or black. He was most patient, I must say.
You might also check the nighttime sky, though I
do not think there will be a full moon. I got some
wonderful shots of the Hunters
Moon in October, totally unplanned. We started
a nighttime walk without my camera. Now, it's almost
always with me.
If you take on this nighttime photography suggestion,
I'd love to hear what your experience was. Please
e-mail
me.
A joyous and light-filled weekend to all.
