orange hibiscus

TODAY'S PHOTO -
an orange hibiscus on an altered background.

I am currently taking a course on the web in Photoshop Elements 3.0. One of the assignments for this first week was to explore some of the tools of the program. I had liked the photo of the hibiscus and not the background, so thought I'd play with this one.

I took the background from one of the unpublished egret photos from last week and replaced the bird with the flower, then manipulated the background and greatly darkened it for contrast. Anyone interested in the "before" pictures can see them on my LESSON 1 page.

I chose to share in the flower in the first place because I particularly like its warmth and the delicacy of its petals.

SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES -
For several years one of my friends has consistently encouraged me to use Photoshop to enhance my work and I kept saying that I was very happy with it as is, particularly my photo/drawings on naturesplayground.com.

At some point I did "give in" and started to explore using software to do more than "crop." I still have this need to be know as a "purist." Thus, for the most part my photos and photo/drawings still remain largely unenhanced by the computer. On the other hand, having experienced the value of certain adjustments, I will use assistance when called for.

I relate this story simply because I find it relevant to other areas of my life as well. I go through my life being very "independent". "I can handle it myself. I don't need help!"

Are there areas of your life where you resist assistance from people or mechanical or electronic aides? If so, what might be possible if you "let go" and allowed the help in? Might you grow in other meaningful ways as a result?

I think these are inquiries worth exploring. How about you?
