seagrape leaves - decayed

TODAY'S PHOTO -
decayed or diseased seagrape leaves in a Boynton Beach park.

Today's photo seems to me to be symbolic of the overall sadness I am feeling regarding the unknown and Hurricane Wilma's ravaging of so much of our natural landscape, in addition to that of the human landscape.

Despite the "wreckage" of the leaves in the photo, there is a light coming through. Also, if you look closely, you may see the spider web I just noticed in the lower right corner.

WILMA'S IMPACT ON OUR LOCAL FAVORED SPOTS -
The signs on the gates at Wakodahatchee Wetlands, from which so many of Picture to Ponder's photos have come, say "Closed until further notice." In the phone call I made I learned that there was extensive damage and, in fact, it is not known when it will reopen.

In addition to concern for the physical space, I wonder about our friends Wilhelm and Jean, the caring security guards with whom we've become friendly during the long hours that they work. What has happened and will happen to their incomes?

The American Orchid Society, the photos from which our long-time subscribers are also familiar, has also suffered extensive damage in their gardens that I cherish. The greenhouse, where part of its roof was damaged, will open in a couple of weeks. It will be much longer before the gardens open, I was told. There was extensive damage here also.

On the brighter side, Green Cay Wetlands (also featured in several of our past issues) will reopen this weekend.

SELF-REFLECTING QUERIES
-
What kinds of things and situations evoke sadness in you? Where do you look to find the bright spots? What do you do?

If I were asked the "what do I do" question a couple of weeks ago I would have responded, "Take a walk with my camera at Wakodahatchee." I now need to create some new answers, at least for the short term.

Create a happy weekend.
